About Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers

Wheaten terrierRecently, a friend of mine added a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier to her household. Unfortunately, she lives in another state, so I can't go over to her house to congratulate her in person (translate: go over and snuggle with her new puppy!). So, I did the next-best thing to playing with her Wheaten Terrier---I went to Petland Naperville to inquire whether or not they had this breed. This place is a great place to observe many different breeds of dogs in one setting, because they usually have upwards of 100 puppies available on any given day. As luck would have it, today they had a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, and I was the lucky one who got to play with this beautiful little puppy. I also learned a lot about this breed, because my Pet Counselor was very knowledgeable about this dog.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a medium-sized dog, and weighs anywhere from 30 to 45 pounds when full-grown. is considered a "working dog." They were originally kept on farms and used for hunting or guarding livestock in Ireland. This breed is generally healthy, so their lifespan is twelve to fifteen years.

If you are not active, this may not be the dog for you. This breed has a warm coat and enjoys cooler weather, so if you live someplace warm, you need to be careful of overheating.

Did you know that the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier's coat changes significantly from puppyhood to adulthood? Puppies usually have various shades of brown or red, but sometimes come in shades of white. Adult Wheaten Terriers' coat changes to white, and then finally changes into the wheat-colored hair that most people recognize in this breed. They are considered to be hypoallergenic, because they do not shed. This means, though, that regular grooming is necessary or else they can get matted hair.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time with the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier puppy. I love the fact that it is very friendly and good with people. That coat is gorgeous, but of course will change as he grows up. I recommend the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier to anyone with a family that loves to be active, and I'm sure you can find beautiful examples of this breed at Petland Naperville.
