I love going to Petland Naperville. On any given day, they have somewhere from 80 to over 100 puppies! You’re sure to find what you’re looking for (and then some!). If you are thinking, “What’s the best dog breed for me,” then this is a great place to observe many different breeds of dogs in one setting. That’s great, because it’s always good to have choices, especially if you decide on adding a puppy to your family. Today I stopped by Petland Naperville to talk to people about big dog breeds. More specifically, I wanted to find out what are the top 10 large dog breeds at Petland Naperville. There were some givens (Labrador Retriever anyone?), but there were also some surprises.
I talked with a Pet Counselor to find out what she believes are the top 10 large dog breeds at Petland Naperville. She started out with the very common and well-loved Labrador Retriever. This breed is historically a great dog for a family. Because of its laid-back attitude, it is good with small children. The Golden Retriever is another popular family dog. They too are great with children, and this big dog breed always seems to be in a good mood. The Bernese Mountain Dog is also a breed who loves families. They can, in fact, pull a sled full of children! Generally, this breed is gentle, but sometimes males might show aggression to other male dogs. The Goldendoodle loves to be a part of a family. They are great with children and other pets. The best part about this mixed breed (“designer breed”) of Golden Retriever and Poodle is that they are easily trainable!
Another quite popular large dog at Petland Naperville surprised me. It is the German Shepherd. Unlike the family-friendly retrievers, the German Shepherd can be tough (think guard dog) or rough (this breed can be aggressive to other dogs of the same sex. If you have the patience and the time to properly train and socialize this animal, then it could be the pet for you. The Rottweiler is another popular large breed dog that has the same temperament. This dog can also be aggressive toward other dogs of the same sex, and must be trained and socialized early on and continually to avoid dominant behavior toward people and other animals.
The Bullmastiff is another popular large breed dog that needs constant training. In this case, though, it’s because the dog is so strong and muscular that he will break through fencing if he feels that he is being neglected by his owner. They can be protective, and is very loyal to his owners.
If you are looking for a calm, quiet large dog, then the Neapolitan Mastiff could be the breed for you. He is very calm and mild-mannered, although he will assert himself if he or someone he loves is threatened. The Dogue de Bordeaux is another member of the mastiff family that needs training and socialization. If not, this 140-pound dog could try to climb up on your lap—and you won’t be able to stop him!
The last puppy I played with was a Siberian Husky. This is another large breed dog that is friendly with pretty much everyone. This breed is good for an active family—this dog can keep up with the best athlete! If you love to “live life” with a four-legged companion, then this dog may be the one for you.
I was really impressed by the quality and selection of large breed dogs at Petland Naperville. It was really interesting seeing what large breeds customers like the most. I highly recommend paying a visit to Petland Naperville to see the variety of breeds—both large and small—that they have!
